Processing Time and Autism

A pause can be part of communication.

Some autistic people need extra time to understand information, organise thoughts or respond. Needs can vary by situation, sensory demands, stress and tiredness. A slower response does not tell you how much someone understands or cares.

Choose a situation

Tap for an adjustment to consider. Ask what helps the individual.

Where could more time or clarity help?

Make space for a response

Communication is something we support together.

Useful words for asking for time

“I am thinking. Please give me a moment.”

“Could you send that in writing so I can consider it?”

“I would like to come back to this. Can we agree a time?”

Speech is one way to communicate. Writing, AAC, gestures or another preferred method may help. Do not require eye contact or a quick spoken answer as proof of attention.
