Procrastination
MOMENTS THAT CAN INTENSIFY IT
Procrastination is often mistaken for laziness, but delay can have many different things underneath it. A person may know exactly what needs doing and still struggle to cross the gap between intention and action.
This full Space to Breathe Therapy guide explores six moments that can intensify procrastination: when a task feels boring, the deadline is not urgent yet, perfection feels required, the reward is too far away, instructions are unclear, or starting brings uncomfortable feelings.
Inside, the guide breaks large outcomes into genuinely startable actions and explores task initiation, motivation, time, ambiguity, perfectionism and emotional avoidance. It includes practical strategies for making the first step smaller, creating gentle interim deadlines, bringing reward closer and defining what “good enough” means.
There is also guidance for partners, families, workplaces and education, a detailed Procrastination & Getting Started Map, a tailored message from Maggie, book recommendations and professional information.
The central message is that delay is information. Instead of beginning with “Why am I lazy?”, the guide asks: “What is making this task difficult to approach, and what would reduce that load?”
Procrastination itself is not an ADHD diagnostic criterion and can occur for many reasons. This resource is psychoeducational and is not a diagnostic checklist or a substitute for individual medical or mental-health advice.
