SAFE DAY TRIPS, MY WAY: A FRIENDLY, FLEXIBLE GUIDE
Day trips can bring new places, travel, crowds, changes and sensory demands. This child-friendly guide helps autistic children and their grown-ups make a clear, flexible plan that supports safety and comfort.
The eight-page illustrated guide covers getting ready, planning the journey, staying together near roads and transport, thinking about the place you are visiting, taking a break, getting help if separated and making a personal safety card. Children can write, draw, point, use pictures or AAC, talk with an adult, or skip any activity.
The guide keeps responsibility for safety with the grown-up while listening to the child's communication, comfort and choices. It includes a simple plan for what to do if the child cannot see their grown-up, agreed with the child before the outing.
