SUPPORTING EMOTIONAL REGULATION AND MANAGING BIG FEELINGS
ADHD Parent Support Series - Part 12

Big feelings are not simply something a child needs to 'calm down' from.

Emotional regulation is a developing skill: noticing what is happening, recognising body signals, communicating a need, tolerating the feeling and gradually learning safer ways to respond.

For children with ADHD, impulsivity, frustration, attention shifts and executive-function demands can make that process harder.

This parent guide looks beneath the visible reaction.

It explores early warning signs, body clues, validation and boundaries, practical calming strategies, environmental adjustments, connection, repair after difficult moments and ways to work with school.

It also explains why a strategy that works beautifully for one child may be completely wrong for another. Regulation support needs to fit the individual child rather than becoming another set of rules they can fail.

A Big Feelings Support Plan is included so families can identify common pressure points, early signs, helpful language, sensory or movement strategies, clear boundaries and what helps everyone reconnect afterwards.

The aim is not a child who is calm all the time.

It is a child who gradually understands their emotions, learns that feelings can be safely experienced and develops a growing set of tools for the moments when everything feels too much.
