SUPPORTING FOCUS, ATTENTION AND MOTIVATION
ADHD Parent Support Series - Part 10

A child with ADHD can sometimes concentrate intensely on something they love and then appear unable to stay with a routine task for even a few minutes.

That inconsistency can be confusing for parents.

Attention in ADHD is influenced by far more than effort. Interest, novelty, urgency, immediate feedback, tiredness, emotional state, sensory load and the executive-function demands of the task can all affect whether a child can get started and stay engaged.

This parent guide looks at focus and motivation without reducing either one to 'trying harder'.

It explores task initiation, distractibility, short work periods, useful breaks, movement, visible goals, choice, immediate feedback, homework and simple reward systems.

It also looks at confidence. When a child has repeatedly struggled, avoided tasks or been criticised for not concentrating, fear of failure can become another barrier.

A practical Focus and Motivation Plan helps parents choose one recurring task, identify exactly where it breaks down and build support around that difficulty.

The long-term aim is not for a parent to constantly manage a child's attention. It is to help the child gradually recognise which strategies support their own brain and learn to use those tools with increasing independence.
