SUPPORTING SELF-ESTEEM AND BUILDING CONFIDENCE
ADHD Parent Support Series - Part 11
Children with ADHD can receive an enormous amount of correction.
Remember your bag. Stop interrupting. Sit still. Listen. Slow down. Hurry up. You have forgotten again.
Even when adults are trying to help, repeated messages about what has gone wrong can begin to shape how a child sees themselves.
This parent guide looks at confidence as something deeper than praise.
It explores the stories children can begin to believe about themselves, how to separate the child from the difficulty, why strengths do not need to be exceptional talents, and how achievable responsibility, interests, specific feedback and relationship repair can build genuine competence and belonging.
It also looks at comparison, school experiences and why encouragement needs to be accompanied by the right level of practical support.
A Confidence Map is included to help parents notice interests, qualities, developing skills, situations where the child feels capable, the support that helps them succeed and any negative labels they may have started to carry.
The aim is not to tell a child they are brilliant at everything.
It is to help them develop a more complete and compassionate understanding of themselves - one in which ADHD-related difficulties are real, but they are never the whole story.
