THE ADHD SHAME SPIRAL — MOMENTS THAT CAN INTENSIFY IT
A forgotten commitment. Another late arrival. A small mistake at work. Sometimes the event itself is only the beginning.
The ADHD Shame Spiral explores what can happen when a difficult moment quickly becomes a judgement about the whole self. Instead of “I forgot something”, the thought becomes “I always let people down”. Instead of “I made a mistake”, it becomes “I am useless”.
This full Space to Breathe Therapy guide looks at six common triggers: forgotten commitments, lateness, mistakes at work, hearing “just try harder”, comparing yourself with others and remembering past criticism.
Inside, the guide explains how a trigger can move through self-judgement, a nervous-system response, avoidance or perfectionism and increased executive load — potentially creating the very difficulties that then feed more shame. It includes practical ways to interrupt the cycle, guidance for family, partners, workplaces and education, a detailed Shame Spiral Map worksheet, a personal message from Maggie, book recommendations and professional information.
The central message is that responsibility and self-respect can exist together. A person can acknowledge impact, repair what needs repairing and build better support without turning a difficult moment into proof that something is wrong with them.
