Understanding Autism

Every autistic person has their own experience.

Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental difference that can affect how a person experiences the world and interacts with others. Autistic people have varied strengths, challenges and support needs. Autism can be disabling, and recognising difference should go alongside taking difficulties and access needs seriously.

Choose an area to understand

These examples invite conversation. They do not describe every autistic person.

Which area feels relevant?

Turn understanding into support

Start with the individual.

Make room for different experiences

There is no single way to look, speak or behave that represents all autistic people. Speech, intelligence or an outward appearance of coping does not tell you everything about someone’s needs.

Use the words the person prefers. Do not require eye contact, suppress harmless self-regulating movements or assume that everyone benefits from the same adjustment.
