Understanding Dyslexia

Dyslexia is much more than spelling mistakes, reading slowly or seeing letters differently.

This standalone guide explains dyslexia as a specific learning difference that can affect accurate and fluent reading, spelling, phonological processing, working memory, processing speed and the organisation of written information. It also looks at the hidden effort involved when someone has learned to compensate so successfully that other people no longer see the difficulty.

The resource explores how dyslexia can appear in children and adults, how it can affect everyday life, and why difficulty accessing written information should never be confused with a lack of intelligence or understanding.

It also covers assessment, masking, overlapping neurodivergence, emotional impact and practical support such as text-to-speech, speech-to-text, audiobooks, templates, clear formatting and additional processing time.

Strengths are included without assuming that every dyslexic person has the same 'gift'. The focus remains on understanding the individual - what is difficult, what helps and how barriers can be reduced without diminishing independence or potential.
