IT'S MORE THAN PICKY EATING
Understanding the Many Reasons Behind ARFID
ARFID Parents Series - Resource 5
ARFID is often misunderstood as extreme fussiness. This parent guide explains why that description can miss the complexity and seriousness of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder.
The resource explores the three commonly recognised ARFID presentations - sensory sensitivity, low interest in food/eating and fear of aversive consequences - while showing how they can overlap. It also looks at interoception, gastrointestinal symptoms, allergy and intolerance questions, neurodivergence, safe foods, brand dependence, school, family pressure, accommodation and nutritional risk.
Parents are given practical questions, an ARFID pattern map, guidance for school and relatives, warning signs for professional review and a lived-experience section, From My Side of the Table.
The central message is that ARFID is not a choice or a simple preference problem. Understanding what is maintaining the restriction gives parents and professionals a better starting point for compassionate, effective support.
