WHEN TICS INCREASE
Stress, excitement, tiredness and other factors

Tics can change considerably from one day to another. A person may experience periods when movements or sounds become more frequent, stronger or simply different. This waxing and waning is a recognised part of tic disorders and does not mean somebody is exaggerating or failing to cope.

This resource explores some of the things that can coincide with increased tics, including stress, excitement, tiredness, anxiety, illness, changes in routine and sensory overload. Importantly, it also explains that there is not always an obvious trigger.

The guide looks at the pressure created when people repeatedly ask what has 'caused' an increase and offers a more supportive approach based on curiosity, reduced demands and listening to the individual.

It includes practical ideas for home, school and work, helpful language, a gentle optional pattern tracker and guidance about when new or concerning symptoms need medical attention rather than being automatically attributed to Tourette syndrome.

The central message is simple: tics are allowed to have louder days and quieter days. Support should adapt to the person rather than expecting them to be the same every day.
