5-4-3-2-1 GROUNDING EXERCISE

The 5-4-3-2-1 grounding exercise gives an anxious or overwhelmed mind something concrete to notice in the present: five things you can see, four you can feel, three you can hear, two you can smell and one you can taste.

This downloadable workbook turns the familiar technique into a fuller interactive activity. Instead of rushing through a list, it encourages people to notice colour, texture, pressure, distance, direction and small details.

Inside the resource:
• 5 things you can see
• 4 things you can feel
• 3 things you can hear
• optional smell and taste activities
• a Back to Right Now orientation page
• a Make It Your Own page for sensory differences
• an after-exercise check-in

The exercise is deliberately flexible. Smell, taste, sound or body-focused activities may not suit everyone, particularly where there are sensory differences, ARFID, trauma, migraine, nausea or other sensitivities. Steps can be changed, repeated or replaced.

The aim is not to complete the numbers perfectly or force anxiety away. It is to give attention a practical route back towards the present moment.
