BODY DYSMORPHIA – WHEN APPEARANCE WORRIES TAKE OVER
Body Dysmorphia is a detailed Maggie's Coaching resource for people whose appearance worries have become difficult to switch off and are beginning to affect everyday life.
The full PDF explains body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), including how it differs from ordinary body-image insecurity and why the condition is not simply vanity. It explores the checking–reassurance–avoidance cycle and common behaviours such as mirror checking, comparing, camouflage, repeated photographs, reassurance seeking, grooming and avoidance.
Readers will find dedicated sections on mirrors, photographs and social media, relationships and intimacy, cosmetic procedures, body neutrality and neurodivergent considerations for autistic and ADHD people.
The guide also explains evidence-based treatment, including CBT adapted for BDD and exposure and response prevention, and discusses when specialist mental-health assessment is important.
Practical pages include a full cycle-mapping worksheet, a step-by-step response to appearance thoughts, mirror and photo boundaries, a values-beyond-appearance exercise and guidance for family members or partners supporting someone with BDD.
The final section contains a personal message from Maggie, a Carl Rogers person-centred perspective and quotation, recommended books, UK support routes, clinical notes, NICE guidance and clear advice about urgent mental-health support.
The central message is that you do not have to pass an appearance test before you are allowed to participate in your own life – and BDD is treatable.
