GLOBUS – UNDERSTANDING THE FEELING OF A LUMP IN YOUR THROAT

Globus is a practical Maggie's Coaching resource for anyone experiencing the uncomfortable feeling of a lump, pressure, tightness or something being stuck in the throat.

The full PDF explains what globus sensation is and explores some of the factors that may contribute to it, including throat and muscle tension, reflux, anxiety, repeated checking, throat irritation, voice strain and other physical causes that may need medical assessment.

The guide takes the symptom seriously rather than dismissing it as 'just anxiety'. It explains the two-way loop in which a frightening throat sensation can increase anxiety and muscle tension, which can then make the sensation feel even more noticeable.

There is a clear section distinguishing globus from genuine swallowing difficulty, together with red-flag symptoms that should be medically assessed. The guide also includes a 60-second throat-and-body reset, strategies for reducing repeated checking, reflux considerations, jaw and neck tension, and dedicated neurodivergent guidance.

Practical pages include a symptom-pattern tracker, a personalised flare-up plan, questions to take to a GP or clinician and a seven-day experiment for identifying patterns without becoming consumed by symptom monitoring.

The final section contains a personal message from Maggie, a Carl Rogers person-centred quotation and perspective, recommended books, professional support routes and clinical notes.

The central message is that the sensation is real and deserves to be taken seriously. Appropriate medical assessment and reducing the fear, tension and checking around the symptom can work alongside one another.
