Longer Exhale Breathing
Why can it help?
When we’re stressed or anxious, breathing can become quicker and shallower as the body prepares to respond to a perceived threat. Gently slowing the breath, particularly allowing the exhale to become a little longer, can help shift the body away from this heightened state.
A slower breathing pattern can support the parasympathetic nervous system, which is involved in the body’s “rest and digest” functions. You may notice your heart rate gradually settle, muscles begin to relax and your overall sense of physical urgency reduce.
Think: I’m giving my body a signal that it can begin to slow down.
