Yoga for Substance Misuse Recovery

Recovery is not only about stopping a substance; it is also about building safer ways to cope, reconnect and move forward. Yoga may be one supportive tool within a wider recovery plan, offering a pause between an urge and an action and helping you notice what is happening in your body.

A short practice can create structure during an unsettled moment. Grounding through the feet, slow movement, supported poses and steady breathing may help reduce tension and bring attention back to the present. The practice should remain choice-led: close your eyes only if that feels safe, avoid breath retention if it increases anxiety, and stop whenever you need to.

Yoga is not a substitute for medical care, detoxification support, therapy, peer support or emergency help. Withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines and some other substances can be medically dangerous, so professional advice is important. Recovery is rarely a straight line. A difficult day does not erase progress; each safe choice and each request for support matters.

A gentle reminder: Work within your own comfort and seek individual medical or professional advice where needed.

Until next time, give yourself space to breathe.
With love, Maggie
