Yoga for Your Nervous System

The nervous system continually responds to safety, stress, change and sensory information. When demands build up, we may feel restless, shut down, tense, exhausted or unable to think clearly. Gentle yoga can offer simple cues of steadiness through supported movement, pressure, rhythm and breathing.

Regulation does not mean staying calm all the time. It means having more ways to notice what is happening and respond to what you need. Some people settle through stillness and longer exhales; others regulate better through rocking, stretching or stronger contact with the floor. There is no single technique that works for everyone.

Begin with choice: sit, stand or lie down; keep your eyes open or closed; shorten the practice or stop. Avoid forcing the breath, particularly if counting or holding it causes dizziness or anxiety. Regular small pauses may feel more manageable than a long session. If symptoms are severe, persistent or connected to trauma, panic or a health condition, consider practising with an appropriately qualified professional.

A gentle reminder: Work within your own comfort and seek individual medical or professional advice where needed.

Until next time, give yourself space to breathe.
With love, Maggie
