A Family Support Guide to Substance Misuse

When somebody you love is struggling with alcohol or drugs, it can feel as though the whole family begins living around the substance. You may find yourself worrying, checking, covering things up, trying to keep the peace or wondering whether the help you are giving is actually helping.

I created this guide specifically for the people around the person who is struggling — parents, partners, adult children and wider family members.

Inside, I talk about how substance misuse can develop, how to approach difficult conversations, the difference between supporting and rescuing, boundaries around money and safety, the impact on children, and when withdrawal or overdose needs urgent medical attention.

There is also a section written for different family relationships, recommended books, and UK help and support information so that you have somewhere to turn even if your loved one is not ready to ask for help themselves.

One of the most important things I want you to take from this guide is that your wellbeing matters too. You can love somebody deeply and still have boundaries. You can encourage recovery without becoming responsible for making it happen.
