ADHD, Neurodivergence & Substance Use
Understanding Vulnerability Without Assuming Inevitably
This resource explores the relationship between neurodivergence and substance use without suggesting that being neurodivergent inevitably leads to addiction. It considers factors that may be relevant for some people, including stimulation, impulsivity, emotional regulation, sensory needs, sleep difficulties, social experiences and co-occurring mental-health needs.
The guide encourages an individualised approach rather than assuming that everyone with ADHD, autism or another neurodevelopmental difference uses substances for the same reasons.
Useful for: understanding possible neurodivergence-related vulnerabilities, recognising the needs that may sit beneath substance use, and supporting more personalised conversations about change.
