Environment, Relationships & Social Factors
How Circumstances Can Shape Exposure, Risk, Reinforcement and Recovery
Addiction does not develop in isolation. This resource explores how a person’s surroundings and circumstances can influence exposure, reinforcement, vulnerability and recovery.
It considers availability, social norms, belonging, relationships, poverty, housing, employment, stigma, community and access to support. It also looks at the other side of the picture: how safe relationships, stable housing, meaningful activity and supportive communities can become important protective factors.
Useful for: developing a broader biopsychosocial formulation, recognising practical and structural barriers to change, and understanding why recovery may require environmental and social support alongside psychological or medical treatment.
