HALT Check-In
HALT is a simple check-in that can help you notice whether an urge is being intensified by an unmet need. Traditionally it stands for Hungry, Angry, Lonely and Tired. Here it is widened to include anxiety, overwhelm and other needs.
The point is not to suggest every urge can be solved by eating or resting. It is to create a small pause between feeling an urge and acting on it.
You may discover hunger, exhaustion, pain, sensory overload, grief, stress, boredom, disconnection or a need for reassurance. Responding to one underlying need can make the moment more manageable.
