SUBSTANCE MISUSE WORKBOOK

Substance use can become connected with coping, difficult emotions, routines, relationships, stress, loneliness, confidence or simply getting through the day. This workbook offers a calm and non-judgemental place to begin looking at those patterns.

I wanted this resource to feel supportive rather than clinical. It does not tell you what you should do or expect you to make an all-or-nothing decision. Instead, it gives you space to notice what is happening before, during and after substance use and to think about what you may be needing in those moments.

Inside the workbook you will find gentle guidance, an easy-to-use Substance Use Diary and a reflection page where you can bring together the patterns you are beginning to notice. You can explore triggers, thoughts, feelings, physical sensations, short-term effects, longer-term consequences and possible safer or healthier responses.

You can complete the workbook privately, repeat the diary over several days or weeks, or take it into a therapy, keyworker, GP or specialist support appointment if that feels useful.

Change can look different for everybody. It might mean becoming more aware, reducing harm, cutting down, taking a pause, stopping or asking for additional support. Small steps still count.

Please be aware that suddenly stopping alcohol or some other substances can be medically unsafe if physical dependence has developed. If you are concerned about withdrawal, overdose, severe symptoms or immediate safety, seek appropriate medical or emergency support.

A gentle Space to Breathe Support Hub resource for reflection, understanding and making informed choices with less judgement and more compassion.
