CREATING SAFETY AFTER TRAUMA

After trauma, knowing that something is over and actually feeling safe can be two very different things.

This guide explores what creating safety can look like in everyday life. It begins with an important distinction: sometimes the danger really is still present, and practical protection must come before techniques designed to manage anxiety. From there, the guide looks at grounding and orientation, predictability, choice, safer environments, relationships, boundaries, consent, sensory needs and ways of helping the body feel more settled without forcing calm.

I have included practical worksheets throughout: an immediate safety page, present-day reminder, control map, safer-space audit, body-safety menu and a full personal safety and grounding plan.

There is also a composite personal perspective, information for partners and families, neurodivergent considerations, professional treatment information, books and urgent-support guidance.

Safety can begin very quietly. It may be knowing where the exit is, having a person who keeps their word, being allowed to say no, receiving information in advance or creating one place where your body does not have to stay quite so alert.

The aim is not to make anyone feel they should simply calm down. It is to help create more genuine safety, more choice and more control - one practical step at a time.
