MANAGING ANXIETY AFTER TRAUMA
Anxiety after trauma can make the world feel less predictable. The mind may repeatedly scan for danger, the body can react before you have had time to think, and ordinary uncertainty can begin to feel much harder to tolerate.
This guide explores anxiety after trauma without assuming that every anxious feeling is caused by trauma or that everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD. It looks at the anxiety-alarm cycle, present-day safety, panic and body sensations, grounding, worry and overthinking, reassurance, triggers, avoidance, self-compassion, sleep, daily capacity and professional treatment.
There are practical worksheets throughout, including an orientation card, worry sorter, avoidance map, coping menu, capacity check and next-step plan. I have also included a composite personal perspective, guidance for partners and family, workplace considerations, neurodivergent needs, book suggestions and urgent-support information.
The aim is not to promise a life without anxiety. It is to help you recognise what is happening, understand what your mind and body may be responding to, and build more choice around how you respond.
Small steps can be significant: noticing a trigger sooner, recovering more gently after panic, asking for an adjustment, challenging one frightening prediction, or allowing yourself support instead of trying to manage everything alone.
