THE GRIEF ROLLER COASTER

Understanding changing emotions and finding steadier moments along the way

Grief rarely moves in a straight line. It can feel more like a roller coaster, with sudden drops, slow climbs, sharp turns and moments when everything seems to pause. You may feel able to cope one day and then be overwhelmed by a memory, anniversary, song or ordinary moment the next. This does not mean you have failed or gone backwards.

I created this compassionate guide to help make sense of the changing emotions that can come with loss. It explores confusion, longing, anger, anxiety, numbness, guilt, relief and moments of peace. These are not stages that everybody must complete. They may overlap, repeat or not appear at all, because every grief experience is personal.

The article also looks at how grief can affect sleep, appetite, concentration, identity, sensory needs and our sense of safety. It offers gentle ways to steady yourself during an intense wave, including naming the moment, reducing the next step, using comforting sensory support, planning for difficult dates and reaching towards safe people.

You do not have to control every feeling or force yourself to accept what has happened. You are allowed to take breaks from grief, return to routine, laugh, rest and experience good moments. These do not erase your loss or the love connected to it.

Read this slowly and return whenever the ride feels unpredictable. You are not starting again each time grief rises. You are meeting a changing experience with the resources you have today.

With warmth,
Maggie
