What is ADHD?

ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a condition that affects both children and adults. It involves differences in attention, impulse control, and activity levels. ADHD is typically grouped into three types:

Predominantly Inattentive Presentation
Individuals may struggle to focus, follow instructions, and stay organised. This type is sometimes harder to identify, especially in girls and adults.

Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation
People may display high levels of physical activity, impulsiveness, and difficulty sitting still.

Combined Presentation
This is the most common type, where both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms are present.

Key Features of ADHD

  • Attention and Focus Difficulties
People with ADHD often find it hard to sustain focus on tasks or conversations. They may be easily distracted or forgetful in daily activities.
  • Hyperactivity
This can look like constant movement, fidgeting, or an internal sense of restlessness. In adults, it may show up as feeling “on the go” or struggling to relax.
  • Impulsivity
Acting without thinking, interrupting conversations, or having difficulty waiting your turn are common signs.
  • Executive Function Challenges
ADHD impacts skills such as organisation, time management, and emotional regulation. This can lead to difficulties with planning, meeting deadlines, and managing responsibilities.

Common Symptoms of ADHD in Daily Life

Some of the common signs and experiences for individuals with ADHD may include:

  • Trouble focusing or paying attention
  • Easily distracted by external stimuli or internal thoughts
  • Difficulty with time management and organisation
  • Forgetfulness in daily activities
  • Restlessness and a need to keep moving
  • Impulsive decisions or blurting things out
  • Difficulty following through on tasks
  • Intense emotions and frustration
  • Hyperfocus on specific interests or tasks (sometimes to the exclusion of everything else)

ADHD in Children and Adults

ADHD is often diagnosed in childhood, but many people, particularly women and girls, may not be identified until adolescence or adulthood. This is because they may develop coping strategies that mask symptoms or because their challenges are misunderstood.Recognising ADHD later in life can be a powerful step toward understanding yourself or your loved one better. Many people find relief and clarity in receiving a diagnosis, along with access to support that can make life easier and more fulfilling.

What Causes ADHD?

The exact cause of ADHD isn’t fully understood, but research suggests that genetic factors play a significant role. ADHD runs in families and may also be influenced by differences in brain development. It’s important to know that ADHD is not caused by parenting style or lifestyle choices.
