Our Why

The why behind our work

At Space to Breathe Therapy, we understand that every individual’s experience of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is unique. Autism is a neurodevelopment condition that affects how people perceive the world, communicate, and interact with others.

It’s called a spectrum because it presents differently in each person, with a wide range of strengths and challenges.Whether diagnosed in early childhood or later in life, individuals with autism often experience the world in ways that may feel different from neurotypical people. With the right support and understanding, many autistic individuals lead fulfilling, meaningful lives.

Autism

What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?

Autism Spectrum Disorder is characterised by differences in:

  • Social Communication and Interaction
People with autism may find social interactions more challenging. This might include understanding social cues like eye contact, body language, tone of voice and conversational flow. Some may prefer direct, literal communication, while others might need extra time to process social situations.
  • Repetitive Behaviours and Routines
Many autistic individuals engage in repetitive behaviours or have strong preferences for routines. These might include hand-flapping, rocking, repeating certain phrases or needing consistency in daily schedules. Familiar routines can offer a sense of comfort and predictability.
  • Focused Interests
Intense and passionate interests are often a strength for people with autism. These interests can be highly focused, ranging from specific topics like trains, animals or technology, to hobbies such as music, art or coding. These interests can bring joy and purpose and sometimes lead to fulfilling careers.
  • Sensory Sensitivities
Sensory experiences can feel overwhelming or underwhelming. Some individuals may be highly sensitive to sounds, bright lights, certain textures or strong smells, while others may seek sensory stimulation. Understanding these sensitivities is key to creating supportive environments at home, school, or work.
Autism

When is Autism Diagnosed?

Autism is typically diagnosed in early childhood, but for some, diagnosis may come later in life, particularly for women and girls, or those who have developed coping strategies that mask their differences. Recognising autism at any stage can be life-changing, bringing understanding, validation, and access to support.

What Causes Autism?

The exact cause of autism is not fully understood. Current research suggests a combination of genetic and environmental factors may play a role. It’s important to remember that autism is not caused by parenting style or life experiences.

Support for Individuals with Autism

At Space to Breathe Therapy, we offer compassionate, personalised support for autistic children, teenagers and adults. Support might include:

  • Emotional support and therapy to help with anxiety, low mood or self-esteem
  • Strategies to navigate social situations or manage sensory sensitivities
  • Working with families to foster understanding and connection
  • Guidance on transitions, such as starting school, higher education, or employment

Early support can make a meaningful difference, but it’s never too late to find the help you need. Our goal is to empower autistic individuals to embrace their strengths and navigate challenges with confidence.

Embracing Neurodiversity

Autism is a natural variation of human experience. Many autistic people bring unique perspectives, creativity and skills to the world. At Space to Breathe Therapy, we celebrate neurodiversity and are committed to creating an inclusive, supportive space for everyone.
