Movement, Sunshine and Mental Wellbeing

Movement and sunlight awaken the mind — helping you release tension, restore balance, and reconnect with the simple joy of being present.

As we step into May, the brighter days and warmer weather bring a much-needed boost to our mental wellbeing, energy levels, and overall mood. Sunshine not only encourages us to spend more time outdoors but also helps regulate how we feel by increasing serotonin and vitamin D levels. Even just a short walk in nature or sitting in the sun can lift your spirits and calm your mind.

Mental Health Awareness Week: The Power of Movement

This year’s Mental Health Awareness Week (12th–18th May) is all about movement. Not intense workouts or big fitness goals, but the simple, everyday ways we can move our bodies to feel better in our minds. Movement is one of the most accessible and natural tools we have to support our mental wellbeing. It boosts our mood, lowers stress hormones, helps us sleep better and even sharpens focus.

Whether it’s dancing in your kitchen, stretching between meetings or enjoying a slow walk in the sunshine, movement doesn’t have to be big to be powerful. It’s about finding what feels good for you.

At Space to Breathe Therapy, we understand that everyone’s relationship with movement is different. This is especially true for neurodivergent individuals, or those dealing with anxiety, low mood or chronic conditions. That’s why we encourage gentle, mindful steps, not pressure. Think five minutes of fresh air, a wiggle to your favourite song or just standing up and shaking it out after a long sit. Every bit counts.

Movement isn’t just good for your body. It’s a way to reconnect with yourself, shift your energy and support your mental wellbeing in a sustainable, compassionate way.

A neuro-affirming approach to therapy

We also want to celebrate and support neurodiversity. Our therapy sessions are a welcoming space for neurodivergent clients, including those with ADHD, autism and other forms of neurodivergence. We take a neuro-affirming approach, meaning we don’t view neurodivergent traits as something to “fix.” Instead, we recognise them as natural and valid ways of thinking, feeling and interacting with the world.

Everyone’s brain works differently and that diversity is something to value. A neuro-affirming approach focuses on building confidence, reducing shame and helping individuals develop strategies that work for them, rather than forcing them to fit into a narrow definition of “normal.”

This means therapy is adapted to the individual, not the other way around. Sessions may include exploring sensory needs, communication preferences, emotional regulation tools or simply creating a safe space where clients can express themselves fully, without fear of being misunderstood or judged.

At Space to Breathe Therapy, we aim to support each person’s journey with compassion, curiosity and deep respect for who they are. You don’t need to mask, explain away or hide parts of yourself here. You’re welcome just as you are.
