Practicing gratitude improved my ADHD and transformed my outlook on life. It shifted my focus from what I lack to what I have, fostering a sense of abundance even in challenging times. Gratitude has helped me cultivate resilience, humility and joy.
Every day, I try to acknowledge the small blessings whether it’s a kind word, a beautiful sunset or a moment of peace.
This practice reminds me that even amidst difficulties, there is always something to appreciate. It’s a gentle yet powerful way to nurture my mental and emotional health.
In my work with clients, I emphasise gratitude as a tool for shifting perspectives and fostering hope. I share my own experiences of finding gratitude in adversity, inspiring others to discover their own sources of light and appreciation. Gratitude reminds us that healing is often about changing the way we see the world.
Power Of Thinking Reshaped
When we want to make positive change in our lives but we are unsure of where to begin, this can put us off from making these changes and ultimately keeps us in a state of the same negative practises we are all too familiar. Change can be both scary and sometimes difficult especially with ADHD, as we are shifting our entire way of being into a new routine of sorts. It can feel easier to ignore the need for change, then to go through the uncomfortable process of uncertainty.
Here are a few small changes that I adopted into my daily routine, to encourage change and welcome positivity into my everyday life. I hope by trying some of these strategies yourself, that you can also reap the benefits of this new positive way of thinking.
Embracing Gratitude Transformed
By writing down things that I am thankful for in my life, it has helped me to see more of the positive, rather than focusing solely on the negative side of my ADHD or what I feel my life is lacking.
Writing gratitude in a journal, can help us to see all of the good things as we move forward on our journey to a more positive outlook.
Another way to do this could be to take small strips of paper and write down one thing you’re grateful for on each, folding them up and putting them into a jar. Each day you can remove one and read it, replacing the one you took with another if you would like, this way you will always have something positive to begin or end your day with.
Self Talk
I have begun to change the way that I think/talk about myself, using encouraging and affirming language. Phrases such as “I am capable of handling this”, “I am worthy of good things” and “I am doing my best and that’s good enough”, can help my ADHD by boosting confidence, motivation and overall wellbeing.
Keeping visual reminders of these positive phrases, could be helpful to adopt this practise and boost your mood on days where you might be feeling low. Posters or framed art work in your home/office, could serve as encouragement to keep up with a more positive mindset.
Personal Growth And Motivation
I have started making a conscious effort to acknowledge the good that I am doing, even if it’s something small. This can help encourage us towards further accomplishment, as we are recognising the good we are doing, rather than focusing on what we haven’t done or what hasn’t worked.
Conclusion
It’s important to remember that even if we try new things and they don’t work, it doesn’t mean that we have failed. Finding tools and strategies that help us to be more positive or manage life easier, is a process that can take time. There is no wrong or right way to do this and the most important thing is that you are trying.
