Welcome back to the Space to Breathe Therapy blog. I’m Maggie, a therapist and life coach. As someone who lives with ADHD, Autism and ARFID, I truly understand the unique challenges you face. Today, let’s chat about something that many of us experience but rarely discuss, the “end of summer blues.”
Understanding the End of Summer Blues
As the warm, sunny days of summer draw to a close, it’s not uncommon to feel a shift in your mood. The transition into autumn, with its shorter days and cooler weather, often brings a reduction in sunlight exposure. This decrease can lead to a drop in vitamin D levels, which are crucial for boosting serotonin, our body’s natural mood stabiliser. For those of us who are neurodiverse, particularly individuals with ADHD, these changes can be especially difficult to navigate. The “end of summer blues” can manifest as low motivation, heightened anxiety and even symptoms of depression.

Tools and Techniques to Combat Seasonal Challenges
There are several tools and techniques you can use to combat these seasonal challenges. One of my personal favourites is the Calmy Weighted Blanket. This blanket uses Deep Pressure Stimulation to mimic the sensation of a gentle hug, reducing cortisol (the stress hormone) and increasing serotonin and melatonin. It’s a game-changer for improving sleep quality and overall mood.
Another fantastic tool that I recommend is the Calm Carry. This device delivers gentle microcurrent pulses to stimulate key acupressure points in your hand, promoting the release of endorphins. This helps with overall mood and calmness.
For those who need a more immersive experience, the Morphée Zen offers 72 relaxation and meditation sessions designed to help you regain control of your stress levels. This device helps you disconnect from the daily grind and immerse yourself in a soothing, distraction-free environment.
