Disappointment
Disappointment comes when reality does not match what we hoped for, expected or worked towards. It may feel like sadness, anger, embarrassment, numbness or loss of motivation. Even when other people see the event as small, the feeling can be significant because it reflects how much the outcome mattered.
This resource gives disappointment room to be acknowledged before moving into problem-solving. It encourages people to recognise the hope underneath the hurt, adjust gradually and look for what remains possible. Acceptance is not pretending the outcome did not matter; it is making space for a new direction when ready.
Coaching tips
· Name what you hoped would happen and why it mattered.
· Avoid rushing into “at least…” statements before the feeling has been heard.
· Give yourself a realistic adjustment period.
· Separate this outcome from your overall worth or future potential.
· When ready, identify what can be learned, changed, tried again or released.
Coaching reflection: What did this outcome represent to you, beyond the event itself?
Until next time, give yourself space to breathe.
With love, Maggie
