Grounding Techniques

Interactive anxiety and overwhelm support

When thoughts are racing or the world feels too much, grounding offers different ways to reconnect with the present. Choose one small activity, or explore several.

Find a starting point

Grounding is not about forcing yourself to be calm. It is about finding something you can notice, feel or choose in this moment.

You are in control. Every activity is optional. You can keep your eyes open, skip sounds or textures, change position, take a break or stop altogether.

What feels most manageable right now?

If sensory exercises make things worse, try an external focus such as naming objects in the room, or choose to stop. You do not need to push through discomfort.
ACTIVITY 01 · VISUAL SEARCH

Find what stands out

Focus on one small visual task. Look for the target shape and tap or click each match. There is no countdown or penalty for choosing another shape.

ACTIVITY 02 · SENSORY GROUNDING

Notice through your senses

A flexible alternative to the familiar 5-4-3-2-1 technique. You do not have to use all five senses or find a particular number of things.

Choose a sense to explore.
Smell, taste, sound and body sensations are optional. You can use just sight or an imaginary familiar place if the real environment is uncomfortable.
ACTIVITY 03 · FEET & PRESSURE

Find a point of contact

If comfortable, notice the surface supporting you. This may be your feet against the floor, your back against a chair or your hands resting on something steady.

Tap each foot to mark where you notice contact. These buttons do not apply real pressure.

Notice where your body meets a supportive surface.

What surface feels supportive?

You do not need to close your eyes, hold your breath, tense muscles or focus internally if that is uncomfortable. If body-focused grounding is distressing, choose a visual activity instead.
ACTIVITY 04 · OBJECT DESCRIPTION

One ordinary object

Choose an object you can see, or imagine something familiar. Look at its details rather than trying to change how you feel.

What is one object within sight?
There are no correct descriptions. The purpose is simply to give your attention somewhere to land.
ACTIVITY 05 · COLOUR HUNT

Explore colour around you

Choose a colour, then look for something in your surroundings that is the same or similar. You can tap the colour below and record what you find.

Choose any colour.
You can choose shades that are easy to distinguish, or use shapes and objects instead of colours.
ACTIVITY 06 · ORIENTATION

Here and now

When you feel mentally far away or caught in racing thoughts, orienting towards familiar facts and the current environment may help. Use only the questions that feel reassuring.

Look around. What room or place are you in?
You do not have to say today's date, remember details or convince yourself of anything. If orientation prompts increase distress, stop and choose a different activity.
ACTIVITY 07 · PERSONAL GROUNDING MENU

Build what works for you

Grounding is individual. Your menu can include activities from this resource or entirely different strategies that you already know help.

ACTIVITY 08 · AFTER THE WAVE

Notice what comes next

There is no requirement to feel better or calmer. This check-in is simply a chance to notice what was manageable, what did not help and what you might need next.

If anxiety has not reduced, that does not mean you have failed. A grounding technique may not be the right support at this time, and seeking help or changing your surroundings may be more useful.
