Loneliness

Loneliness is the painful feeling of not having the connection, understanding or belonging we need. It can happen when someone is physically alone, but it can also occur in a busy room, family or relationship. Masking, feeling different, recent change and difficulty finding people with shared experiences can deepen loneliness.

This resource validates loneliness without suggesting that the person is unwanted or unimportant. It encourages low-pressure connection, self-compassion and environments where people can be alongside others without having to perform socially. Connection can begin with one small, safe point of contact rather than a large social leap.

Coaching tips

·   Send a simple message: “I’m thinking of you” or “Would you like a short chat?”

·   Choose shared-interest spaces where conversation has a natural starting point.

·   Try parallel connection: sit with someone while each of you does your own activity.

·   Plan contact before difficult evenings, weekends or transitions.

·   Speak to yourself as kindly as you would speak to someone else feeling alone.

Coaching reflection: Where do you feel most able to be yourself, even in a small way?

Until next time, give yourself space to breathe.
