FACING FEARS: GRADED STEPS
Avoidance can bring short-term relief while making fear more powerful over time. Facing a fear works best when the steps are chosen, graded and connected to something meaningful.
This one-page ladder provides five practice steps with before, peak and after ratings, followed by space to record learning and the next step.
You can repeat a step, make it smaller or pause. Success is not defined by feeling calm; it may be staying present, reducing a safety behaviour or discovering that you can cope.
Plan exposure with a trained professional when fears are severe, trauma-related, medically complex or linked with significant risk.
With warmth,
Maggie
