PROBLEM – GOAL FRAMEWORK
From feeling stuck to taking positive steps forward
When we are struggling, it is often much easier to describe what is wrong than to work out what we want instead. The Problem – Goal Framework is a practical, CBT-informed resource designed to help you move from feeling stuck towards a clearer and more manageable direction.
The framework begins by giving the problem space. What is happening? How is it affecting you? When is it most difficult? What seems to keep the pattern going?
From there, it gently shifts the focus towards the preferred outcome: What would you like to be different? What would improvement actually look like in everyday life? What would you notice yourself doing differently?
Inside the guide you will find:
• a clear Problem – Impact – Preferred Outcome – Goal – First Step framework
• guidance for describing problems without turning them into your identity
• examples of moving from problem-focused language to useful goals
• a full printable Problem – Goal worksheet
• support for breaking large goals into manageable steps
• prompts for identifying barriers, adjustments and support
• guidance around realistic process goals
• a supportive message from me
The framework is not about forcing positivity or pretending that a problem is simple. It is about identifying a direction and finding a next step that is realistic for you.
If a goal keeps feeling impossible, the answer may not be to push harder. The step may need to become smaller, clearer or better supported.
A helpful question to begin with is:
“If this started to improve, what would I notice?”
You do not need the whole route mapped out before you start. Sometimes one realistic next step is enough.
