Sadness

Sadness can follow loss, disappointment, loneliness, change or a period of holding too much inside. It may feel heavy, quiet, tearful, tiring or numb. People experience sadness differently: some want comfort and closeness, while others need space and reduced demands. There is no correct timetable for feeling better.

This resource reminds people that sadness needs compassion rather than pressure. Allowing the feeling to be acknowledged can reduce the effort of hiding it. Gentle comfort, connection and basic care can support the nervous system while the emotion moves at its own pace. If sadness is persistent, worsening or affecting daily life, additional professional support may be helpful.

Coaching tips

·   Lower expectations for the day and choose only what is essential.

·   Create a comfort menu: a blanket, warm drink, familiar programme, music or fresh air.

·   Tell someone safe whether you want company, listening or practical help.

·   Keep basic needs visible: fluids, food, medication, rest and daylight.

·   Use kind language: “I am having a hard day” rather than “I am failing.”

Coaching reflection: What kind of comfort would feel supportive rather than demanding today?

Until next time, give yourself space to breathe.
