SELF-COMPASSION THOUGHT RECORD
Self-compassion is sometimes misunderstood as making excuses or letting ourselves avoid responsibility. In reality, it offers a steadier place from which to understand what happened, acknowledge pain and choose what is needed next.
This one-page thought record guides you through five stages: identifying the difficult moment, noticing your inner response, recognising the shared humanity in struggling, finding a compassionate voice and choosing a supportive action. The prompts invite warmth without denying facts or forcing positivity.
A compassionate response might sound gentle, but it can also be clear and protective. It may involve resting, setting a boundary, repairing a mistake, asking for help, reducing sensory pressure or leaving an unsafe situation. The closing space allows you to write one phrase you want to carry into the rest of your day.
This worksheet can be used in therapy, coaching, reflective work or independently. If self-compassion feels unfamiliar or uncomfortable, begin with the words you would offer someone you care about and adapt them until they feel honest enough for you.
With warmth,
Maggie
